Chimera, York University's specialist contemporary chamber music group, begin this day of Japanese music and its influences with a concert of contemporary music from Japan. The concert will include a performance of Toshio Hosokawa's 'Ave Maria' and two World Premieres by British composers.

A seminar by composer Roger Marsh on Japanese culture in contemporary Western music and his own music in particular.

The programme will include Roger Marsh's 'More Silly Love Songs' for voice and ensemble. Commissioned and premiered at the Late Music Festival in 2003, this piece takes a fresh look at some popular love songs old and new (see if you can spot them), from the anonymous Westron Wynde to John Lee Hooker.

Also in the programme will be the premiere of Thomas Simaku's  (50 in 2008) 'Clarimbasso' for bass clarinet and percussion and Marsh's Japanese ghost story 'Hoichi' for amplified alto flute and electronics, played by the incomparable Jos Zwaanenburg.
